Fractional Needle Dermabrasion and the New Aesthetics Market

Dermapen | Fractional Needle Dermabrasion (Micro Needling) and the New Aesthetics Market

The Aesthetics Market continues to grow, having emerged from the recession of 2008. Depending on the market survey, its annual growth ranges from 5-7%.

But things are not the same since the recession. Patients are more sensitive to cost and becoming reluctant to engage in procedures with prolonged downtime. Patients are showing a preference for augmentation over ablation.

A tale of two treatment philosophies: Augmentation vs Ablation; both remove fine lines and wrinkles.

Augmentation using dermal fillers thickens the dermis and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal filler revenue has increased 10-12% annually from 2010 to present. Revenues were 1 billion in 2010 and are projected to grow to 2 billion in 2015.

While augmentation is showing spectacular growth, the ablative treatment modalities (energy delivery systems such as lasers, radio frequency, and ultrasound) are doing poorly. The revenue from energy delivery devices is decreasing 5% per annum. Continue reading

How long have you been using Dermapen?

About 3 years.

What made you interested in Dermapen Micro Needling Skin Therapy?

The guys who got the rights to sell it in the U.S. contacted me first and wanted me to give my opinion so they brought it into my office to test it a little bit. I was impressed with it. Micro- needling has been around for a long time but this was a versatile and efficient way of doing it. It helps with texture and scars and other things. I was quite impressed with it so purchased it and have been using it ever since.

What do you think are the most compelling reasons why a physician’s office would want to adopt the device and what impresses you the most about it?

It’s similar to the fractional laser yet it’s not expensive; a few thousand dollars versus many thousands of dollars. It’s very simple and easy to use and it’s something that has good efficacy without tremendous capital outlay. In skilled hands, it’s’ a very safe treatment that has filled a niche for us.

Would you delegate to staff?

I have delegated it to my PA and nurse and they have 11 years experience. The device is only as good as the person running it. The device should only be used by a certified individual with experience.
